Using van der Waals layered nanomaterials as building blocks, Zheng HAN has achieved a series of breakthroughs by designing unique nanostructures. His work spans quantum-effect-based semiconductors, disruptive mesoscopic devices, and quantum control technologies for nanomaterials. Among his most representative achievements are: the demonstration of an intrinsic two-dimensional magnetic semiconductor spin field-effect transistor, and the successful fabrication of a 0.6 nm vertical conduction channel, reducing the FinFET fin width to the sub-nanometer scale — approaching the physical limit.

In recent years, he and his collaborators have proposed and developed a "charge-modulated superlattice" technique, enabling the quantum state control of a variety of materials. For example, they significantly raised the temperature required to observe the quantum Hall effect under a 0.5 Tesla magnetic field—from the liquid helium range (−269 °C) by over 70 Kelvin to the liquid nitrogen range (−196 °C).
